The affiliate system is designed to help you grow your business through 'paid referrals'. There are lots of folks out there who know people or have an audience
of people that would be a good match for your business. The affiliate system makes it easy to offer these kind referrers (aka "affiliates") a commission on any sales that they cause.
It's an unbelievably great way to grow a business because you (who we'll call the "advertiser" in this scenario) only have to pay these affiliates if and when their referrals actually buy something. Contrast that with paid advertising like PPC where costs can be very high, results anything but sure, and cashflow a pain.
What you may or may not realize is that there's a TON of folks out there who have access to large groups of your prospects - through their blog, their existing customer and prospect lists, their speaking events, whatever - who would love to make some extra money by offering high-quality products and services to their audience.
Success with Affiliate Marketing
In order to be successful with affiliate marketing, though, you need to get a few things right.
First, you need to have a great product and good marketing that's proven to work. Affiliates hate nothing more than sticking their neck out for an advertiser and then watching that advertiser drop the ball and sell nothing. If they're going to risk their reputation by recommending

you, they're going to want to get something in return. That is, they'll wanna get paid. And to get paid, you gotta sell something. So be ready to sell.
Second, you need to make sure you have the technical details (i.e., tracking) in place. The only thing affiliates hate more than watching you drop the ball and sell nothing is watching you sell stuff to their crowd without them getting the proper credit (that is, cash). A top-end affiliate is going to want to know about your tracking system. With ours, you'll wow them with some tracking details that are probably beyond what they've ever seen before. Third, you want to make it easy as pie for them to promote you. If it's a big hassle, they just won't do it. If it's easy peasy, they will. Help them out by creating great marketing collateral for them - banners, emails, web pages, whatever - and make it even easier by giving them already done code with their referral links built in so that they can just plop in place and be done.
Fourth, you need to let them see their stats. Affiliates want to be able to see that you're tracking their referrals when they do a promotion, so having a place where they can log in and see their real-time visitor and sales stats is important.
